No kidding
According to a recent study by FDA Grain free diet has raised the chances of heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathies in dogs. FDA issued warning to pet owners and veterinary professionals about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients. Grain-free potato food is considered most dangerous.
Dog food companies don't want to credit this fcact. They are saying that this study is inconclusive.
There are certain breed specificities with heart disease. Dog Breeds such as Great Danes, Boxers, Newfoundlands, Irish Wolfhounds, Saint Bernards and Doberman Pinschers are more prone to heart diseases. These dogs are more prone to heart failure.
Vitamin deficiencies
It has been observed by scientist that Vitamin D deficiency leads to congestive heart failure in dogs.
That's not all:
Amino Acid Deficiency
Studies show low levels of certain amino acids such as Taurine and l carnitine has been found in dogs with heart failure.

Steps to Prevent Heart Diseases in Dogs |
Look:
If you have reached here by reading my article, you probably have got an idea to prevent heart disease in dogs.
Here are the steps to prevent heart disease in dogs:
a. Feed your dog a balanced diet. This means not only good commercial food but also add some fruits, raw vegetables in your dogs daily food. homemade raw food can also be given.
b. As your dog crosses the age of 7 years add a vitamin supplement containing L- Carnitine, and taurine. This will protect your dog's heart. There are many over the counter food supplements available such as Beaphar Top 10, Cardio Support. Many food companies such as Royal Canin has started blending taurine in their adult dog food. In my clinic, I prefer prescribing Intaspharma Zipvit syrup which contains both L-Carnitine and Taurine.

c. Get your dog's vitamin D serum level estimated by a qualified veterinarian. If it is low, your vet will prescribe a suitable drug. Recent studies show dogs with low vitamin D are at risk for cancer. Therefore, it is a good idea to give a food containing vitamin D in your dog's daily diet.
d. Prevent obesity- give ample exercise. Half day fasting once a week is good for an adult dog.
e. a regular health check-up
Why does dogs eat grass!! Is it normal!
Despite the notion that dogs are strictly meat eaters (carnivores). All animals require a balance of vegetable matter in their diet. Therefore, dogs eat grass.
Dog's nutritional requirement |
Just like any other animal dogs too require vitamins (nutrients that they cannot produce themselves) as well as fiber.
This fiber comes from plants and grasses. There are several Omega fatty acids which are also elusive in today's modern landscape, yet essential in all animals’ diets.
[maxbutton id="3" text="Click here to Tweet this info" nofollow="true" ]
Like most mammals, dogs also benefit from pro-biotic nutrients: bacteria that assist the gut in digestion. Those bacteria lead a long, happy life inside the gut, assisting absorption of nutrients without ever causing illness. They also protect the gut from invaders….. they are a valid part of the immune system.
Mostly, our manufactured dog foods have not provided all of these elements until recently, as consumers have become more educated. Now we can spend about $2 per lb (here in the US, where we're not metric) and get a zero-grain dog food, complete with pro-biotics, beets, greens, and spirulina at Costco.
This is why dogs eat grass to get those probiotics and vitamins. Sometimes when they eat loads of grass and cannot digest it they vomit the whole of it.
How to stop dogs eating grass |
There is a product called green tripe that is a bit of a miracle for dogs with digestive problems. Green tripe is the product of digestion in the first stomach (rumen) of grass-fed animals (usually cattle and goats). Get it from a local butcher and serve to dogs several times a month as part of a raw food diet. It smells horrible - like a combination of death, manure, and bad breath.
If you don't have a local butcher to get it raw you can find green tripe canned online in a product called Trippe.
Finally, a word of caution. please don't get jumbled up this matter with dogs eating other animals poop or soil. That condition is called "Pica". Pica can be due to various reason such as irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatic enzyme deficiency, vitamin deficiency and much more reason. better to visit the nearest vet.
Healthy Dog Diet |
I encourage dog owners to explore the possibility of supplementing their dog’s daily diet with a few veggies: cooked carrots, broccoli, potatoes… mashed up and mixed with their commercial diet. A little chicken broth makes it all very palatable. I promise your dog will stop eating grass, and there will be no consequent vomiting.
Can we feed milk to dogs?
Milk to dogs!!
Milk as such is not harmful to dogs. Afterall, milk is so much full of nutrients. It is the way milk is produced is responsible for all ill effects on dogs. If your dog is not lactose intolerant, milk is very well digested.
The modern-day system of milk production
Milk nowadays is produced from cows kept in cramped places. These cows have injected hormones and are often in negative energy balance. These hormones are harmful to our dogs.
Another hormone which is harmful is oxytocin. Oxytocin is secreted at the time birth of calves in case of cows. This hormone stimulates uterine walls to facilitate the birth of calves.
Additionally, Oxytocin is used to promote milk letdown in
cases of agalactia (lack of milk) and to facilitate treatment of mastitis (infection or inflammation of the
mammary glands) in cows (EMEA 2001, Intervet UK 2003).
laboratory made oxytocin is injected in cows of modern dairy farms to enhance the production of milk.
Oxytocin is currently included on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances as a synthetic substance allowed for use in organic livestock production. This oxytocin when injected into cows body(maybe for milk production) causes extreme pain mimicking labor pain. This pain, in turn, releases adrenalin( commonly known as flight. fright hormone). Adrenalin comes to milk and even pasteurization does not destroy its residue.
Now when Adrenalin containing milk is drunk by dogs or human, they suffer from several physical problems.
A few years ago there was news that milk is causing early puberty in girls. though later this was dismissed as a myth, doubts remained.
Milk preservation and packing
In modern day America we get ultrapasteurized milk. This milk contains many antibiotics and preservatives.
Propylene glycol is added to cow feed and consequently, this comes in milk. Propylene glycol is poisonous to dogs.
It is these additives that cause problems in dogs. Milk causes flatulence, diarrhea, and vomiting. Interestingly, I know some vets(my friends) who put blame on milk for causing cancer or skin diseases!! Perhaps, their opinion is so much biased.
Which milk to give
If you get milk directly from cows, unpasteurized and without any additives, There is no reason of depriving our dogs from such milk. I understand this is not possible in our country unless you are a cowboy, but things are changing. People are now demanding free-range chicken, organic vegetables, likewise we may someday get unpasteurized milk. The demand for milk is bound to rise, as American Heart Association has now given a clean cheat to milk and advising getting 2 to 3 servings per day, and why not go for unadulterated natural milk!!
Finally, Coming back to dogs, give milk to dogs but that should be mixed with water in equal quantity. If you see some adverse reaction, stop immediately and never ever give milk to the dog.
Now there is a trend to give goat milk to dogs. As goat milk is naturally hypoallergenic, lesser in lactose and easily digestible, it is considered safe.
Do you know your dog's ticks can kill you in 48 hours!!
Originally these ticks were found in deers. Probably due to the destruction of forests, constant human interference, these ticks now affects dogs too. Human is not its hosts, but they carry diseases that affect humans.
These ticks are known as Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis). Recently as April 2019, these tick has invaded Staten Island, New York, and health officials are warning people there is a concern this tick could transmit diseases.
According to a new Columbia University study published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, the invasive tick species may pose a greater risk in New York than previously thought.
According to Meredith VanAcker, a member of Diuk-Wasser's lab who collected the data as part of her Ph.D. thesis. "And because females don't need to find male mates for reproduction, it is easier for the population to spread." This makes this tick most dangerous.
The tick was identified for the first time on a farm in Ames, Iowa in Hunterdon County on November 9, 2017.
As the temperature begins to rise and the flowers blossom, this little problem gets bigger and bigger.
How do tick affect us
There are many species of dog ticks that are harmless to us. Fortunately, only one or two species are a problem for us.
If you live in Northern hemisphere or in countries such as the USA or Canada, there is a disease called Lyme disease. Ticks carry these bacteria of Lyme disease known scientifically as Borrelia burgdorferi.
Contrary to popular belief, any ticks can carry Lyme disease bacteria. It depends upon the region you live in.
In the Northeast, Midwest, and South, of USA disease is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick traditionally known as the deer tick. On the West Coast, the culprit is the Western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus).
In Canada, one in every five humans is at risk. Scientists expect more cases of Lyme disease this year. The situation in Canada is probably better, as per statistics.
[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="268"]

In 2017, 3943 dogs in Canada tested positively for Lyme Disease in contrast to almost 303,000 U.S. dogs. This year alone, there have been 179 positive cases of Lyme Disease in Canadian dogs as opposed to over 22,000 in the States.
Additionally, earlier in 2013, there was a series of attacks of Powassan virus. This is deadlier than Lyme. This virus affecting us through ticks can kill you in 48 hours.
This Newly found tick is yet to be studied. Instead of affected you through diseases such as Possawan virus or Lyme disease, these new ticks affect our systems directly through its toxin. This is why once bitten, these ticks can kill you in 48 hours.
What Ticks does to dogs
When there are ticks in the body of dogs, our dog is in trouble. There is always something wriggling in their body.
Sometimes these ticks go inside the dog's ear and it is double trouble. As a result, there is constantly itching. dogs itch their body and there is rash all over their body.
What exactly Lyme disease do to us!!
According to a study conducted by Ramb A, Ferreira M.A, Barraviera B, Haddad J.R.V. on The first reported case of human tick paralysis in Brazil found ticks can induce a motor illness causing an acute, ascending flaccid paralysis with a rapid clinical evolution and lethal if not immediately treated both in humans and in animals. It is mainly related to ixodid ticks by existent neurotoxins in the females saliva.
The symptom includes fever, a rash, and fatigue. If left untreated, Lyme disease can cause facial paralysis and heart and neurological disorders. This is just an oversimplification of the probable problems we might face.
Unfortunately, the hormonal system is the main victim of this disease. Blood glucose levels become altered, increasing adrenalin level, making us tired and depressed.
There may be hallucinations and schizophrenia-like symptoms. This is popularly known as psychiatric symptoms of Lyme disease.
Why Lyme disease is increasing
You may be wondering why Lyme is increasing. With modern day medicine, anti-tick sprays and deterrents the disease should decrease instead, it is rising. Well, This is happening due to global warming. Global warming gives Ticks longer time to feed, as there is longer spring or summer in countries like Canada. They get a better chance of multiplication.
According to a recent study published in the journal, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B Larval ticks are coming out earlier and infecting more hosts, and are thus increasing the overall number of Lyme disease-carrying creatures.
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="248"]

Consequently, the researchers concluded that in warmer years, ticks emerged as much as three weeks early, which poses a risk to public health. This year 2018 is one such year. This is why authorities in Canada are extra cautious this time.
Other diseases which are transmitted to human via Dog ticks are
- Anaplasmosis
- Babesiosis
- Ehrlichiosis
- Q fever
- Rocky mountain fever
- Tick-associated rash
- Tick paralysis
Why are tick's population increasing
With the latest inventions in science, awareness and tick prevention measures, the population of ticks should have gone down. Instead, it keeps on increasing and through mutation, we are seeing deadlier ticks. Why is this happening!!
The reason being due to ignorance of only one fact.
Pesticides-
There is indiscriminate use of pesticides in pets, in forests, in crops, in our garden, in our drinks. Pesticides bring down our immunity and encourage mutation among other living organisms. The stakeholders of pesticide companies are big corporates.
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="615"]
No country is thinking of controlling ticks naturally, it is almost always pesticides. We have learned nothing from DDT fiasco of the 70s. Pesticides are responsible for the deadly and quicker mutation so that ticks can kill you.
Perhaps human beings are destined to perish this way!
