Seizures in dogs

Winter comes and there are so many cases of seizures in dogs. More so in small breed dogs such as pomeranian. These seizures when happening the dog becomes helpless and even the owner, don't know how to help. sometimes these seizures go on for hours and can be life-threatening.

How common are dog seizures

According to Fred Wininger, VMD, MS of University of Missouri seizure affects an estimated 1% of the pet dog population.

What causes seizures in dogs

Seizures are generally classified as structural, metabolic or idiopathic/heritable. Idiopathic epilepsy is by far the most common diagnosis.

A dog's age is an important factor in determining the cause of the seizure. If the age of the dog having a seizure is between 1 and 6, there is an 80% percent chance of it being idiopathic epilepsy.

We use the "idiopathic epilepsy" when the dog is otherwise normal between seizures and there are no identifiable causes.

Identifiable causes of seizures are

Seizure dog breeds

Purebred dogs are more likely to have seizures than crossbred dogs. Males are more likely to suffer from seizures than females. Pomeranian dogs are known to have a seizure at least once in their lifetime. Pomeranian dogs are prone to suffer from idiopathic epilepsy.

Old dog seizure

Seizure in an old dog is common. they have it due to other health issues such as brain tumors, low blood sugar, kidney or liver disease, Cushing's disease. Therefore, you need to watch out for other symptoms. There will be symptoms of diabetes in the case of low blood glucose. In the case of a brain tumor, there will be a problem with walking.

Dog seizure triggers

What triggers seizures in dogs? There are many internal and external stimulus that triggers a seizure in dogs. There are plenty of triggers in a dog's environment. Recent vaccination, food, dust, stress, intestinal worms, a sudden drop in environmental temperature are some of the common factors triggers seizure in dogs.

Do you know your GSD can become lame without any cause!!

This is happening just too often now. A healthy GSD Pup, who is very playful, suddenly starts limping. When brought to our clinic, radiographic examination reveals no sign of crack or fracture of bones. After treatment the dog becomes good and then again after a week or a month, the dog again starts limping in another leg.

This condition is called Panosteitis. This condition is classified under developmental disease, as this affects growing pups mostly.

Who is most affected!!

Though it affects mostly the German Shepherds but can happen to Dobermans, Goldens, Saint Bernards, Bassetts, and Labradors too. Dogs mostly of 3 to 18 months of age are affected. Males are known to be affected more than female.

Cause- the Exact cause is unknown. Some genetic cause might be there, but scientists have failed to point to any cause.

Signs- Pain, Fever, Limping, refusing to eat, yelp when long bones are touched.

Treatment- Most of the times the disease cures on its own. It cures and reappears. Reappears on another leg.

sometimes treatment is necessary.

Treatments are -

  1. Immediate pain relief medicine

  2. Changing diet and food

  3. Excercise restriction and rest

  4. applying pressure bandage also helps.

Top household hazards for dogs and cats

Our pets are like our children. Just like children when they roam our house, they stumble to many things and these sometimes cause hazards to them. Dogs, especially the young ones like to explore, they play with ropes, our shoes, etc. They unknowingly fell into accidents. Here I give a list of things to watch for.

Common household objects that are potentially hazardous

  1. Electrical Cords

  2. Lead-based Paint

  3. Cleaning Supplies

  4. Antifreeze

  5. Insecticides

  6. House Plants

  7. Alcoholic beverages

  8. Prescription drugs

  9. Artificial sweeteners

  10. Chocolates

  11. Sewing needles, fishing hooks

  12. Rat poison

Besides the above lists, there are some elements of house design that is hazardous to pets. An open window, Slippery floor, Stairs are also dangerous to pets.

  1. Electrical cords- Cats like to chew electrical cord. To prevent them from getting electrocuted consider wrapping cords in rubber covers that can be purchased at most stores that sell electrical and home repair supplies. Putting the cords inside PVC tubing is also an option. You can also rub them with a citrus scent, which cats dislike and will avoid.

  3. Lead-based paints- Thankfully lead-based paints are not common nowadays. Earlier lead poisoning used to happen in pets, but they still pose threat through old worn out batteries, etc. Keep your pets away from renovation projects.Household hazards for dogs and cats

  4. Cleaning supplies- Laundry cleaner, glass cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, bathroom cleaners, drain opener, laundry detergent all are hazardous for pets. Keep them away from pets. Sometimes gaseous residue from cleaning agents pose threat to pets when they are let inside a room with these cleaning agents. Therefore, try keeping cleaning agents in a tight closet. household hazards

  5. Antifreeze- Is a Sweet but Deadly Poison for Pets. Ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in most antifreeze brands, has an inviting aroma and a sweet flavour. Its appealing smell and taste often tempt animals and children to drink the highly poisonous substance. There are many household items that contain ethylene glycols. from lubricating paints, paint primers, floor cleaners, agricultural items. To see the full list click here

  6. Insecticides- Avoid chemical insecticide as much as possible. Dogs love a carpet of thick green grass. They run around on it, roll on it, dig it, and stick their noses in it. Whatever collects on their feet and coat outdoors stays there until the next time they get a bath. Consequently, when cats and dogs lick their paws they get poisoned. Better to use natural insecticides in your garden.

  7. Household Plants. Chrysanthemums, daffodils, tomato plants, lily, and many other plants are hazardous for dogs and cats. To see the full list click here.

Christmas tree poisonous?

Pine, fir, or spruce, any evergreen tree contains small amounts of essential oils that make it smell great but hard on an unsuspecting stomach. The real danger though is consuming a big volume. If your pet acquires a taste for trees (either real or fake), enough pine needles can form a wad in the GI tract and cause an obstruction.
